Reading the Room: Ten Horse Body Language Signals Worth Understanding

Horses don’t have words. What they have instead is a physical communication system that runs constantly, a live broadcast of ears, eyes, nostrils, posture, weight shifts, and tail carriage that tells anyone paying attention what they’re thinking and feeling at any given moment.

The catch is that you have to actually be paying attention. And more than that, you have to know what you’re looking at.

New horse owners tend to focus on the obvious signals: pinned ears, raised tail, a hard head toss. Those matter, but they’re often the end of a sequence rather than the beginning. The quieter signals that come first are the ones that give you the most useful information. On the other side, experienced horse people sometimes spend so many years reading their own horses that they apply those patterns everywhere, which doesn’t always work. Every horse has a baseline that belongs to them, and reading body language well means understanding both the universal signals and the individual variations.

This isn’t a rigid checklist. It’s a vocabulary. The goal is to give you enough language to start having a real conversation.


The Signals Above the Neck

1. Ear position

Ears are the headline. They move independently, they move fast, and they’re nearly impossible to fake. A 2014 study from the University of Sussex found that horses actively use both ears and eyes as visual indicators of attention, and that other horses, and humans who know to look, read those cues meaningfully.1 The same research established that forward ears track active interest and alertness, while ears pinned flat indicate aggression or high emotional arousal. Ears drooping loosely to the sides belong to a horse who is resting or genuinely at ease. Ears stiffly pricked and twitching, combined with a high head and tense body, indicate fear or acute alarm.

The most useful readings are in between those extremes. A horse with one ear forward and one angled back is dividing attention, tracking what’s ahead while staying aware of what’s behind. In a training session that’s often a good sign, because the horse is listening to you while remaining aware of their environment. Both ears pinned back hard, paired with a tight jaw and narrowed eyes, is something different. That’s a warning, and it deserves to be taken seriously.

The important caveat is that ears never tell the whole story on their own. Ear position is one channel in a multi-channel system, and reading it in isolation produces false readings. You need the face, the body, and the tail together to understand what’s actually being communicated.

2. Eyes

The Equine Facial Action Coding System, developed and validated by Wathan and colleagues and published in PLOS ONE in 2015, documented the full range of equine facial movements and their relationship to emotional state. Among the most consistent findings: orbital tightening around the eye is reliably associated with pain and negative emotional states, while soft, slow-blinking eyes appear in calm, relaxed horses.2 Wide, white-rimmed eyes, where the white sclera becomes visible around the iris, are an early warning signal that something has shifted. In a calm horse you’ll rarely see white. When you do see it, take stock of what else the body is doing, because the emotional state has changed.

3. Nostrils and muzzle

Actively flared, pumping nostrils belong to an alarmed or heavily working horse. Soft, barely moving nostrils are part of the relaxed picture. The lips and jaw are equally worth watching. A loose, slightly droopy lower lip is one of the clearest indicators of physical and mental ease. Tight lips, a clenched jaw, or a wrinkled muzzle suggest tension or discomfort. Bruxism, which is grinding teeth when not eating, is a more specific signal and is associated in the literature with pain, gastric ulcers, and chronic stress; it’s worth noting in context, particularly if it occurs around specific events like girthing up or the start of work.

4. Head height and carriage

A horse carrying their head high with a tight neck is somewhere between alert and anxious. A head lowered below wither height, with a soft neck and relaxed poll, belongs to a horse who feels safe in their situation. In groundwork and training, watching for the head to drop is one of the most accessible real-time indicators that a horse is moving from tension toward relaxation. It’s not a subtle signal when you know to look for it.


What the Body and Posture Are Saying

5. The resting hind leg

A horse standing with one hind leg cocked, weight shifted casually, mouth closed and relaxed, is expressing genuine physical ease. It’s a posture a horse only adopts when nothing feels urgent. The caveat that every handler eventually learns is that cocking the same hind leg repeatedly, or reluctance to bear weight on one specific leg, is a different signal entirely. Repeated, asymmetric hind leg lifting or shifting during standing can indicate pain or developing lameness and warrants monitoring. Context is everything: a horse dozing in afternoon sun with a cocked hind leg is not the same picture as a horse in a stall who won’t square up on their right hind.

6. Muscle tension

Before a frightened horse pulls away or bolts, the tension is already visible in the body if you know to look. Eyes widen, nostrils tighten or flare, the tail may rise or clamp, and the breathing rate shifts. These micro-tensions happen before the visible reaction.² Learning to read them means you can often interrupt an escalating sequence before it completes.

One of the most useful habits you can build is running your hands along your horse’s topline, neck, and hindquarters when they’re genuinely relaxed, often after a quiet grooming session or a day off. You’re developing a felt sense of what their muscle tone is like at baseline, which makes it considerably easier to notice when something has changed. A horse that feels meaningfully different under your hand than they did yesterday is telling you something worth investigating.

7. Weight shifting and foot movement

Pawing is almost always impatience or frustration: a horse who’s been waiting too long or who wants their feed and can’t have it. Stamping usually means flies, unless it appears alongside other distress signals. Repeated weight shifting from foot to foot in a horse that’s otherwise standing still can indicate ulcers, physical discomfort, or anxiety, particularly if it’s happening at times and in contexts where the horse would ordinarily be settled. A horse standing square and still, relaxed through the fetlocks, is physically comfortable.


The Tail: More Than Just Flies

8. Tail carriage and movement

A tail swinging loosely and naturally belongs to a relaxed horse. A tail clamped down tight against the hindquarters is a clear discomfort or fear signal. A tail held high and flagging indicates arousal and energy, which may or may not involve concern depending on what the rest of the body is communicating.

Tail swishing under saddle is worth paying more attention to than most riders give it. Sue Dyson’s Ridden Horse Pain Ethogram, published in the Journal of Veterinary Behavior in 2018, identified 24 behaviors reliably associated with musculoskeletal pain in ridden horses. Repeated tail swishing was among them, and notably, a 2021 study applying the ethogram to elite dressage horses found that ten horses showed repeated tail swishing synchronized with spur application.3 A horse who swishes persistently during flatwork is not being theatrical. They’re communicating something about their experience of the work, and it’s worth investigating whether the cause is saddle fit, contact, rider position, or an underlying physical issue before assuming it’s behavioral.


The Signals Most People Miss

9. Licking, chewing, and sighing

These are widely discussed in horsemanship circles and frequently misunderstood. The traditional interpretation, that licking and chewing signals submission or agreement from a horse, has been substantially revised by research.

Norwegian University of Life Sciences researchers Margrete Lie and Ruth Newberry spent eighty hours observing feral horses in Ecuador and collected data on 202 sequences of behavior involving licking and chewing. They found that the behavior was actually performed more often by the aggressor in a social interaction than by the recipient, ruling out submission as the primary explanation. More usefully, the sequences showed that the majority of behaviors before chewing were tense and the majority of behaviors afterward were relaxed. The researchers concluded that licking and chewing is associated with a neurological transition, from sympathetic arousal (dry mouth, elevated stress) back toward parasympathetic activity (salivation, relaxation).4

The practical distinction matters. Licking and chewing doesn’t mean the horse is submitting to you or agreeing with what you’re doing. It means tension is leaving their body. Those things are related but not the same, and understanding the difference changes how you interpret the signal in training.

Sighing, snorting, a spontaneous shake of the head, or a sigh that drops the whole topline slightly serve the same function. They’re the parasympathetic nervous system coming back online. When these signals appear during or after a training session, the right response is usually to pause, keep things quiet, and let the horse consolidate what just happened.

10. Yawning

Yawning is one of the most context-dependent signals on this list. A horse yawning in the sun after a quiet grooming is entirely unremarkable. A horse yawning repeatedly during isolation or confinement stress is a different picture, and the British Horse Society’s equine stress guidance notes that repetitive yawning in a stressed context should be read as a displacement or arousal-reduction behavior rather than simply tiredness.5

Yawning that clusters around specific events is the version most worth paying attention to. Repeated yawning at girthing, at the start of ridden work, or immediately after eating can be a flag for gastric discomfort or ulcers and is worth discussing with a vet if you’re seeing it consistently in those contexts. Like almost every signal in this guide, the same behavior can mean different things depending on when it occurs, how frequently it occurs, and what the rest of the body is doing at the same time.


The Most Important Thing to Remember

A list of ten signals is a starting point. The real skill in reading body language isn’t memorizing what each signal means in isolation. It’s learning to read the whole picture, in real time, for your specific horse.

There’s no universal interpreter for these signals, and their meaning is always shaped by the conditions, the individual animal, and the context. The horse people who are genuinely fluent in body language are not people who memorized a chart. They’re people who spent years paying close attention to specific horses and building a felt sense of what those animals look like when they’re comfortable, when they’re uncertain, when they’re worried, and when they’re done.

Spend time with your horse when nothing is being asked. Notice what relaxed actually looks like in their face, their tail, their breathing, and their posture. That baseline is your reference point for everything else, and it’s something nobody can hand you. You build it by watching.
